Clem’s BBQ in Tyrone, Pennsylvania

I left Harrisburg around 7am this morning for a motorcycle ride to western Pennsylvania. I met up with my friend Daneen and we headed west towards Bedford. Then we took route 99 north. After stopping for gas for the second time and after around 180 miles, I used Urbanspoon on my trusty iPhone to locate a place for lunch. Clem’s showed up and was only about 5 miles away.

I could smell the BBQ as we pulled up. Dismounting from the bikes I could see the cook beside the building piling some wood on the fire as the flames grew. Time to go inside and see what this place is all about.

The female employees meet the upmost standards! It didn’t hurt that she leaned over towards me revealing her, umm… yeah… as she rang up our order. But on to the food!

Ribs, chicken, fresh cut fries, a roll, and Jones soda. As an added bonus, they have vinegar on the table. Fresh cut fries with vinegar! I couldn’t finish my meal so I packed up the rest and placed it in my side case for later. I will definitely make the trip back out here for BBQ.

The Gas Station Gastro-Pub Photo Shoot

Fresh Pizza

My latest project was to photograph The Gas Station, a gastro-pub in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. The client wanted both interior shots and food shots for multiple uses.

View a sample of these shots on my Flickr Gas Station set. Check out their web site or pay them a visit and try out their food.

German Restaurant Idea

Living in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania I’m surrounded by the influence of the Pennsylvania Dutch. And I’m curious why there is not a German restaurant here. With the local markets in the area, the abundance of farms and butchers, there is a huge, fresh supply of vegetables, fruits, fish, beef, pork, and poultry.

What I envision is an establishment where a person can order schweinsbraten, wiener schnitzel, reiberdatschi, potato dumplings, grilled trout, goulash, apple cake, apple strudel, potato bread, and many other German foods. All of these can be made by ingredients provided by locals in the immediate area.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

Living on Food Stamps

This will be interesting to follow. Sean Caleb of CNN is finding out what it is like to live on food stamps for one month. Since he doesn’t qualify to use this program, he found that the most a single person can qualify for is $176 per month. That’s about $6.28 per day. Can you live on $6.28 per day?

Some statistics from his report already:

  • 31 million Americans rely on the food stamp program
  • In Louisiana 1 out of 6 people uses food stamps
  • Food stamps are actually now called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Lomo Saltado

Tonight I made Lomo Saltado. And this is how I did it.

First I started with some new york strips which I cut into thin slices. I then marinaded them in rice vinegar with salt, pepper, and some garlic powder.

Next came the pepper, onion, and tomato. I’m not a fan of onions but I decided I would cook this with onion for flavor.

Lomo Saltado Prep

I sliced the onion, pepper, and cut the tomato into wedges.

Then I brought a large pan to a high heat and used some oil to stir fry the steak. After the steak was browned I added the onions. After that cooked for a few minutes I added the peppers and the tomato.

Lomo Saltado (french fries)

While I was cooking the steak I had french fries in the over cooking. When these were done I pulled them out of the oven and stirred them in with the other ingredients. Not too long though! You don’t want the french fries to get too soggy.

Here’s my finished plate. Yum.
